Review: Behemoth - Scott Westerfeld

Behemoth (Leviathan)Title: Behemoth
Author: Scott Westerfeld
Series: Leviathan
Format: Hardcover
Pages: 496
Genre: Steam-punk
Published: 1st October 2010

The behemoth is the fiercest creature in the British navy. It can swallow enemy battleships with one bite. The Darwinists will need it, now that they are at war with the Clanker powers.

Deryn is a girl posing as a boy in the British Air Service, and Alek is the heir to an empire posing as a commoner. Finally together aboard the airship Leviathan, they hope to bring the war to a halt. But when disaster strikes the Leviathan's peacekeeping mission, they find themselves alone and hunted in enemy territory.

Alek and Deryn will need great skill, new allies, and brave hearts to face what's ahead.

*Warning: I am a massive Scott Westerfeld fan girl - there may be gushing and squeeing in the following review*

Behemoth is the exciting follow up to Westerfeld's awesome steam-punk adventure, Leviathan. It continues the tale of Alek, secret heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne, and Deryn, secret girl, on board Leviathan.

The British Airship is making its way to Istanbul in Turkey where they hope to be able to convince the Sultan of the Ottaman Empire to not join forces with Germany. Needless to say, things don't go as smoothly as planned, leading to great fights, espionage and battle scenes.

As in Leviathan, the machines and creatures in these books stretch the imagination to the extreme and the great descriptions are enhanced with the fantastic graphics throughout the book. I really like the characters in these books and we get to know and understand them a lot more in this one. Westerfeld's writing is amazing as always with just the perfect amount of detail without going overboard. The action scenes flow at the right pace, making them seem frantic but not overwhelming.

Highly recommended to fans of steam-punk, action-adventure and Scott Westerfeld in general. I'm so glad there is going to be a third book of this series.
